I maybe having a problem with my compressor (99 XP-XLT 4x4/5.4 4-corner LLS), it sounds like its stuck-up occasionally, I can hear strange noise (not compressor noise when operating) in the area where the compressor is, front-passenger side right under the washer tank. I've heard this at least a couple of times already, no longer than 15 seconds, awful sound, once when the vehicle is off, and once when the vehicle is on/idling after a 20 minute ride.
Any idea what could it be?
I have refurb drier and been planning to install it this week-end, is there anything I could do for the compressor?
In case you're wondering, I just replaced my shocks, including front air shocks, so I ordered drier since it sounded like a cheap preventive maintenance, both for my new shocks and the compressor itself (that's what I get from a thread here).
I Finally got around replacing the LLS compressor drier, and found the rubber floating isolators of the compressor all worn-out (99 XP XLT, probably still original compressor) - One is totally broken and the other two are barely hanging. They do not sell just this just this part from what I gather, so I 'supplemented' the worn isolators with some rubber grommets I bought from a local auto-supply store (bought two packets of assorted grommets). I made some improvement, but made the suspension a bit stiffer that the vibration of the compressor is now channeled a bit more to the chassis but since the idle vibration of XP is notoriously coarse anayway, plus the compressor operation last for no more than 30 seconds, I guess I can live with it. At least now, gone is that awful rattling sound whenever the compressor kicks-in.
It looks like there is nothing else serviceable about this compressor, but I found from this forum that an improved bracket is available for around 60 bucks, part #4L1Z5Z205AA. I came across this info a bit too late, I'm already working on it. The work is fairly moderate, but would recommend to anybody to consider getting the kit if you are planning to work on your compressor - save you time (took me a long time to find 'suitable' material to work with, it was getting late and I had to put things back) plus the new kit is supposed to work like wonder.
