I seem to have acquired an afliction in my '96 F-150 and I'm not sure if it's electrical or fuel supply related.
I have the 4.9 (300 inline 6 cyl.) and the E40D, It has started this irratic jerking at any speed, but it really gets intense when it reaches overdrive. At first I thought perhaps it might be in need of a fuel filter change, but as it got progressively worse I noticed it doesn't seem like a lack of fuel (as in ******* out). It acts more like it could be electrical cutting out and in. It jerks very hard when it's happening. Perhaps the coil breaking down? I haven't a clue.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so what they did to remedy it.

well quicklook2 can't say as I've ever driven over a washboard, so that would be hard to confirm. Have driven over a wash-out though, and I'd say the sensation was similar. Actually it's like a pulling back feeling. DOHC330MustangGT, My fuel presure seems to check out fine, unless I switch over to the rear tank, then there is none (but thats a different problem I'll get to one of these days) paredneck33 Yes, it is when it's under a load that it does that. I've noticed that at the end of 3rd it's getting more intense, and then when it hits overdrive it starts really jerking hard. However once I reach the speed I want to travel and back off on the pedal a little, (releive the load on it) it almost stops jerking completely until I come to a hill or accelerate again. I'll have to check into if there is a test I can perform on the pickup coil on the distributor, to see if it is malfunctioning. 84FB351 That sounds like another possibility, I have just recently installed a B&M shift kit to the E40D it's a two program and a bypass type. However, I did switch it into bypass but it still did it's jerking thing. It hadn't been doing it prior to installing the B&M though. but also didn't start immediately after installing it either.
Thanks for the ideas on what to possibly check into Guys, I'll post if I find out what it is to let you know. Meanwhile any other ideas are more than welcome as well. Sure beats taking it into the local Parts Changer, so he can start replacing everything he comes to playing the odds that sooner or later he'll replace the right thing.
you mean you never hit rumblestrips on a highway? i find that hard to believe.
you may have convertor shudder, that is what i was asking. many posts on this. you need to drain convertor, trans., put in new filter and fluid, and maybe a shudder fix additive.
quicklook2 rumblestrips? I didn't know we were suposed to drive on them. All these years I've been avoiding them hmmmmm.
Well, it just so happens I picked up twenty some odd quarts of tranny fluid and a filter, and some Slick 50 conditioner because I was gonna change the fluid and filter when I installed the B&M, but I didn't need to pull the pan to do it. (it's electronic)
Guess I need to get around to changing it anyways to see if it helps. And even if it doesn't fix the jerking around, it might improve the hydrolic pressure so it doesn't have to wind so high before it shifts

I've had the shuddering under power on my truck a while back and ended up i needed new plug wires. One had broken down in Ohms. Changed plug wires and all surging/shuddering under load was gone.
Mine is a standard so not sure on the way an atuomatic would feel.
just to keep in mind that if you change your tranny fluid and that old stuff has more than 30,000 miles on it you could be asking for more problems. I'd just be careful of that.

why?
did you know that you have to reply with more than 10 characters on this forum?
Culvert, I did pick up a set of wires, (and plugs) figured it was about due anyways. I'll post back if that makes a change prior to the tranny fluid change.
Kansas Mike, MLPS? More, Lame, Position, Sensors? Not sure what the MPLS is. Not getting any codes.
PAredneck33, I understand your comment. I've encountered that problem before. Started blowing seals, bands started slipping. No fun. I beleive this tranny has been serviced regularly though, but thanks for the heads up.
