Need Advice with Problem

I have a 2004 F250 with, of course, the 6.0L, with 25,000 miles, Banks 6-Gun, and K&N filter. Have had not problems, and ran great up til now. The problem only happens when towing a load. When going uphill and the trans is on the verge of downshifting, instead of downshifting the engine sounds like it is coughing. The noise comes from the filter location. During the "cough" it loses power and keeps doing it at a constant pace until you give it more throttle and then it will downshift and run normally. Please help!! Any advice wanted!!

Welcome to FTE

Others will follow with better advise. But, I wonder though if you have answered your own question.

The noise comes from the filter location.

Even the K&N could have been clogged thereby reducing airflow. Very important to this engine design. Might want to check it out.

BTW: Many here will tell you that the stock (Donaldson) air filter for this engine is about as good as they come.

Goodluck.

I did clean the filter using a K&N Filter Recharge Kit and problem is still there.

If you do a search for engine flutter you will find many replies to this exact problem. I hate to say it but as of yet they do not have a fix for it although I have been told the newest flash will address this. The sound you are hearing is boost preasure being released and it has nothing to do with the modifications to your vehicle mine will do it stock or when tuned. I think it is the egr opening and closing rapidly. It will sound like a dog barking. Your boost will be between 10-13psi and you will be towing up an incline and as soon as your boost gets to 10psi and has a slight resistance it will do this. If you hit a steeper incline then the boost will increase to above 13psi then it will increase in speed and will not do it. The FORD TECHS have no clue on what or why these do this. I am positive we know more than them on this issue. The hard thing is to get it to do it regulary so you can duplicate it for the Tech and if you have modifications then they blame it on them instead of fixing the problem. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, it's throttle position and engine load sesitive. I can duplicate the turbo flutter/bark better with the manual transmission. But, since Zoodad mod, I don't get this issue as often. Still I can induce the condition almost any time. Learning when to shift is key. Faster shifts from 1st to 2nd almost make the condition never apear. I've been explained to that it's an EGR open/close timing issue too. Since this is dumping cooled exhaust gasses into the intake, it makes sense we're hearing this from the air filter conduit. Although I can induce this condition with manual transmission/shifting I would think that you guys with the Torqueshift wouldn't experience it much. Hmm??? All I can say is that I'm pretty sure that Zoodad mod helped in my case. More cooler air can't be a bad thing.

I just completed a 5900 mile trip pulling a 8000# camper and experienced something similar to the above posts. When on an incline and the truck had down sifted the 2nd time and you get off the throttle at the same time there was a fluttering sound (like a plastic fan blade hitting on something) from the left front wheel well. It did not do this every time and have not been able to duplicate it so have hesitated to say anything to the dealership. Do you think it could be the same thing as discussed in the threads above?

my 2005 did that during our first 6,000 mile trip towing a 12,000 lb fiver,,

even had a call from Detroit about my replies on their surveys,,

took it to the dealer and they did an update on the computer(s) and presently on the road towing again and after over 2,000 miles on this trip I can say the tranny is operating as I would expect it to,, no coughing or bucking while trying to make up its mind on downshifting,, just a nice smooth transition into the correct gear,,

even wife commented about how better it sounds while towing up a hill,,

think it is a tad quieter also as it just slips into the gear with little or no increase in engine noise,,

certainly a "GREAT" improvement,,
