One question to all yall out there. If the chip tuners, etc, are safe for the engine and truck, why does it give the option to change back to stock "when you have to get it serviced"? I am just worried. I do not want to screw up my new truck like I did my last one, and the one before that, .... I want(need) the extra grunt in the 4.6, but dont want to pay 25000 for it when I have to replace the truck in 5 yrs. Any input??
They do so little that they really can't mess anything up. The biggest thing is the change in shift points and firmness. That makes everyone think they've got all this new found HP. I've got one and it does make the truck a little snappier, but not enough to hurt anything
Well, these trucks are not the kind you swap in a chip. You get a tuner/programmer, etc.
They change a number of perimeters, mostly how soon the vehicle goes in to WOT mode, where you can run a richer mixer. They can also advance the timing, which is the main place you get more horsepower.
On regular gas tune my Superchips makes the truck quicker and more powerful. Not like dropping in a bigger engine, but like increasing the jet size in an old four barrel, or putting headers on an old car. On premium tune my truck runs much better.
It also seems to work well with the intake and catback.
The shift improves enough that that would be worth it to me, if there was no horsepower gain.
I have been messing around with my Veritech and a newer Gtech and I am not yet ready to post numbers, but the reg tune, with no shift change, does save me time to 60. With the shift set to Superchips default (pretty snappy) there is even more gain. On Premium it's a lot better.
Numbers in a week or two, got to go through the Premium gas in the tank now, and try it on reg/untune/standard shift.
You are more prone to hotrod your truck with a tuner, but that is the main place you will encounter problem. Wearing things out faster, from punching it a lot.
Any addition or mod will decrease the amount of reliability.
So will just doing maintenance If you touch it, it is more prone to failure. I would not worry about a tuner, especially if you use the defaults, or less.
But this seems to be a pretty perfected technology. I have been using things like Hypertech chips since the mid-eighties, and so far I am very pleased with the tuners.
