If you must pay for Norton, whether store bought or DL'ed. run a sweep of the PC first, and make sure the PC is clean. If you are switching Norton from one version to another, you probably need to completely remove the old Norton first. I suggest resubscribing to whatever Norton AV you said "ran out" the other day, instead of upgrading to a newer different version of NAV. It sounds like you are trying to install a newer version over the old one and that causes trouble.
Are you running dial-up (something slow) or broadband? Having broadband, makes it much easier to get good free programs and update the OS and various security programs.
Just to make sure you understand...carefully check the PC for bugs before you install any Norton stuff, it is very important.
Many PC gurus will recommend disabling system restore, running the PC in safe mode, and then run all your updated security software in the "deep clean" or full scan modes. Once you are satisfied that all pests are gone then install NAV.
If you are not sure you have all pests out, a good indicator of cleanliness is how fast your PC boots up and operates in general. If you are noticing strange pauses, when downloading or even turning the PC on or off, then you may have some critters lurking.

The person overseas told me install the new Norton and then remove the old 2003 Norton. I just got another noticed a minute ago that I am still protected but it runs out in 7 days. I thought it was all used up by now.

I have comcast high speed. BTW what is the OS (old system?)
I am not sure of the reasons to upgrade Norton every year or two, but I am still running Norton 2002 and they give me updates. Newer isn't necessarily better. However in your case, anything other than NAV 2003 may be better.
There are claims that NAV2003 doesn't operate correctly with Win XP.
Search the Microsoft website, look for "programs that have compatibilty issues running with Win XP" (or something to that affect)
