I need some input please. Here's the scenario: '01 7.3 crew cab 4x4. I took the suggestion of removing the oem airbox and in its place i put a 8'' diameter K&N filter, open air. The mileage should have gone up but it didn't, it went down. On the hwy it went from 18/19 down to 15/16. I have been using diesel kleen and the present tank I am running now, I am at a 1/2 tank with only 95 miles to show for it!! What the heck happened? That is the only thing I have done to this truck was change out the air filters and my mileage went in the crapper. I have even asked a friend to try and find a replacement airbox to put back on b/c its ticking me off, my mileage was better before the switch. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have caused this or what to check? What would cause it to go through so much fuel. I don't tow anything. I change the fuel filter every 5k miles or so.
Flowing more air shouldn't lower your fuel mileage. Sounds like something else happened at the same time. Do you have a loss of power as well? Does the truck idle okay? Did you fill up at the same time as replacing the filter?
Something is wrong, I just don't know what. Everything else seems to be the same, idling, power, etc. The air filter has been on for some time, so its not just this tank. But not every tank goes through this fast. A friend mentioned possibly a camshaft sensor?? Is that a possibility? Any other ideas?
When you say 18/19 is that by pen and paper or the overhead computer thing. I have found mine not to be accurate and 15/16 sounds more like right. Do you have the 29 gal or the 38 gal that will help determine if 95 miles is bad or worse depending on how much you started with.
Truck has no smoke at all. It seems to run perfecetly fine except for the fuel usage.
I put a k&n filter on my motor home with the v-10 and the mileage droped also. I contacted k&n and they told me to disconect the battery for 2 hours to erase the computer then reconect it and drive it about 100 miles for the computer to reset itself. and it worked my milage before the k&n was 8.5 then it went to 6.0 miles per gal. but after the battery diconect and the 100 mile drive it went 10.0 and has stayed there. hope this may help you.
I'll try the battery reset this weekend. I'm leaving on a trip from TX to N.Dakota next week which is 1500 miles, I'll try anything. Also the cam sensor change is in the near future, thats a pretty cheap fix. I'm planning on putting on the BTm muffler in the next few weeks as well so the minotr changes may pay off. Thanks for the posts.
