I have a 97 F350 crew cab long bed auto trans with just under 100k miles. I recently got a 24 ft toy hauler that weighs app 6k lbs. I have been watching rigs much bigger blow by with ease. From what I can find out this truch must be SICK ! Milage on an easy tow is maybe 10 and any grade or head wind and you may as well forget about over drive. Except for an enlarged first stage on the exhaust all is stock. I have considered mods but not sure that would be a fix. A local diesel shop checked it out and said they could find nothing wrong.
This truck it seems has been a dog fron the getgo but wasent a problem until I started towing the trailer. If any one has ideas I am all ears. Dynamite is a definite option at this point!!
were are some thing to check:
1. air filter
2. oil level
3. fuel pump
4.injector o-rings
try going to another shop because there is something wrong!! you might want to replace the air filter and change the oil( if not done in 5000miles) you might not be getting much air to the cylinders( like a sticking choke on a gasser). do you get alot of smoke? hope this helps!!

air filters serviced & cleaned
oil changed every 3k
Fuel filter & housing just changed
no error codes
one injector replaced
how does one check fuel pump and/or return lines
Seeing some black smoke ( not bad ) all the time

my 96 never blows smoke, you may have an issue. should pull 6K like nothing, hell my old 89 w/ 351 could pull that, only to 55 though.
You should have plenty of power with a 7.3. Are your tires standard size? What is your differential ratio? A 3.55 rear end with tall tires might cause what you are experiancing. In this case either go with stock tires or change the rear end to a higher ratio.
Sounds like stock tires, although I'm not sure. I use 265s on my E350 as stock, but I also have a 3.55 rear end and I can pull just fine, and get in the mid teens for milage. Does this truck have a cat? It might be plugged if it does.
Other then that, I would suggest installing, at least temporarily, a boost pressure gauge to verify that the turbo is working properly. If this all checks out I would have to say that most likely you need to replace your injectors. (I assume the shop did a compression test to verify that it is within specs, though this isn't likely to be a problem unless the air filter wasn't maintained)
I would also unbolt your airbox assembly so you can see the turbo fins. Make sure that they are still there (hopefully..!) and that they aren't bent or chipped. Maybe that black smoke could be a sign of a poor air/fuel mixture and could be caused by bad turbo fins??
I had an 03 7.3 Was a gas hog from day one,Ford was no help.I installed a Hypertech but It kept thorwing all kinds of error codes.traded it back to JCW and got a predator power tuner. IT made a truck out of it.Ran on lowest setting. gas milage increased from 8 to 12 while towing 10,000 lbs.17 mpg empty.Free advice is worth pretty much what you pay for it. GOOD LUCK Larry
Check the fuel pressure at the filter under load.
If above 60lbs, it is fine.
There could be alot of things wrong and have no codes.
One problem we have seen is the wear on the injectors. More so after an injector is replaced. When an injector is replaced the the injectors on that bank have no oil while cranking to start for the first time. It also take 50-75 miles of driving to get all of the air out of the high pressure system. The no oil condition after replaceing seems to wear the injectors more so.
Try unbolting the down pipe from the catalytic converter and taker her for a spin, that will eliminate exhaust restriction as a possible problem. Low boost situations will blow black smoke, so turbo problems are a definite possibility. Could also be a partially closed exhaust back pressure valve, would definitely rob power... CPS could be going bad, and may not throw any codes. Just take it one step at a time, you'll figure it out. Just keep asking questions, these guys here can help plenty.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have not had an opportunity to test the fuel pressure. I did run a series of 0-60 spirts to check the exhaust system. Some prior and tried to replicate the same with the exhaust disconnected. there was no perceptable change. Time for these sprints was 14+ seconds. WOW !!.
How does this compare to a real stock '97 7.3 ??
Considering a chip for mostly towing application. Any opinions??
