I was driving down the freeway and all of the sudden a warning light came on for the gas cap. Well, the gas cap was securely fastened so i'm wondering why the light came on. Then, later in the day, i'm driving and the emission light comes on. Only thing i've done is a Banks cat-back exhaust and air filter housing which was installed about 700 miles ago. I'm thinking the lights are malfunctioning?? Anybody had this problem before, and am I headed to the dealership? Thanks for your input.
details of truck:
2004 F250 crew cab long bed 4x4, 6.8L V10, lariat, 6.5" lift, 37s, banks stinger system (cat back and airfilter housing w/ K&N).
Gas cap is emmission related, NYS emission testing tests the gas cap. Maybe for gasket leakage, who knows, but it does effect the out come of the emission test. Maybe it would be a good idea to replace the cap with a locking one, might solve the problem, and add theft deterent at the same time.
I had this happen on a Taurus my wife was driving for a while. Dealer replaced the cap but the problem re-occurred within a week. The the replaced something else (sorry I fdon't remember what) that correted it. Apparently Ford required them to replace the gas cap first and if it returns, the replace the other item. Seems to me it was some sort of a sensor.
Well I would get the truck to a dealer and have them tell you what code was tored in the memory.
did you put fuel in since the light went out.
could be a bad fuel cap or a leak in the fuel system somewhere.
Take a look under the vehicle looking for wetness.
Understand that the fuel systems are under pressure now and must hold it at certain level which is monitored by the pcm
