i changed the oil and filter drove 700 miles and the oil all ready has a rank smell about it and it is extreemely dark for less than a 1000 miles on it how well do engine oil coolers help and are they worth it? had a professional oil flush performed 5000 miles ago trying to fix the prob but no change.
any info would help thanks
i have a 88 f25 with the 351 in it and the tow package
It is really no alarm that the engine oil gets "dark" or smells "rank" after nearly 1000 miles. That tells you the oil is doing its job of suspending contaminents that it has absorbed. It's supposed to do that!I'm sure it isn't as bad as a diesel engine,is it?You may try another brand like CATO Mystic JT8.It is already "dark" out the bottle because of the additive package in it and really stays that way throughout the service period.Something is telling me that your PCV system may not be right.Verify the PCV valve is correct for the year model and flush all the hoses back to the intake port. Also check the crankcase breather and hoses related to it.
Good luck,
Phillip
at the time we flushed the motor we replced the pcv valve as well as replced part of the hose the only other thaught i can come up with is the fact that the dip stick gets a bad build up of burnt oil on it where it passed so close to the manifold i put some heat wrap on it today to help it from cooking on at that point thanks again and you didnt say on the oil cooler good bad or worth the money?

That is due to a buildup of deposits in your engine. Here's what to do. Drain out the oil and put on a new filter. Pour 3 quarts of TRANSMISSION fluid in the crankcase. Tranny fluid is very high detergent. Run the engine at a fast idle for about 10 minutes. Don't rev it up. Drain out the fluid, which will be as black as the oil you just drained! Chaneg the filter again. Change the oil as usual. I would recommend going to Mobil 1 synthetic after you get the engine cleaned up.
I have done this on several engines and it works! My 300 I-6 actually had sluggish oil returns which forced oil up the breather hose out on teh highway... doing this flush cured that problem.
