Anyone have any info good/bad on Mobil's new conventional oil?
I've seen the commercials, but haven't heard from anyone who has tried this stuff. I've notices it is SM-CF rated, so it seems durable.
I've used the 5000 and 7500, can't say I really find it all that different than other synthetic oils. I change my oil at 2,500 mile intervals, regardless of what the maker says it can go to. The condition of the used oil did seem to be not as dark as other oils when I drained it out of the engine, so it does in a way seem to be made to last longer.
Thanks for the reply.
I've also had an issue with using synthetic as it is my thought that since I keep my cars well beyond 150k, I'm certain that engine seals are going to go bad anyway, so why be using a synthetic that will end up pouring out. My thought is that by sticking with a good conventional grade of oil, you will have more options to lean on should you end up with a leak and not being able to afford to replace the seal. Options like high mileage oil or a thicker weight for example.
I like you change my oil at 2500-3000 intervals.
I used the Mobil 7500 on my last oil change (the first time I've ever used anything other than Castrol GTX). Right now at about 1800 miles on the oil, I can't honestly say that it looks any "cleaner" than the Castrol GTX I've used all my life. On my next change, I will be going back to the GTX. Nothing bad to say about the new Mobil oil, it's just that GTX has served me well for many years, I'm going to stick with it.No, I'm not a Castrol salesman!
I've used Mobil dino oils for several years and have been happy with their product. I have a Dodge Spirit with a 2.5L 4 cylinder. I bought it with 30K miles and now have 163K on it. It runs well and I hope to keep it for many more years. I changed the oil every 3K to 4K miles. I am now running the Mobil 5000 in it. I have 3K on this oil, and it is definately not as dark as their former oils at this stage, not that color is much of an indicator of the health of the oil. I am going to stretch the change intervals out to 5K. The owner's manual allows for this, based on my type of driving. I run Mobil in my other vehicles, including my 92 F-150. I use the same brand and weight to keep things simple.
You think that Mobil's new conventional oil will drive the other's (Val, Castrol, Pennzoil, etc) to market their conventional for longer drain intervals? Or have you heard if they plan too?
Mobil lead with the first mass-market synthetic and I think that Mobil may be taking the lead here. Valvoline has been in the lead in the introduction of new products for the last few years that others have copied, Durablend and High Mileage, creating new marketing categories (and profits).
Well I'm beginng to rethink sticking to Castrol.
Not only that, but Mobil 5000 is 1.68/qt at W-mart while GTX is 1.89/qt.
I'm amazed at how much cheaper Mobil is and you get more additives to boot.
There are a lot of great conventional oils on the market, but the big names, Castrol, Pennzoil and Valvoline sell at a premium price mainly to pay for the huge advertising budgets. The "gas station brands", like Chevron, Mobil, Shell and 76/Conoco/Phillips appear to be better buys. Mobil 5000 carries an API CF rating in addition to SM, so it could be the best of the bunch.
Mobil5000 is the best thing since sliced bread. The guy that was going by the look of an oil to determine how well it was "cleaning" really doesn't know what he's talking about.
The only way to tell if an oil is doing its job and working well for you is to send a sample to an oil lab for an analysis.
My vehicles told me i better not change there castrol or they'll
do something bad to me??? Seriously until somone comes out
with a product that goes so beyond what im using now that i
could'nt refuse than i'll change, so for now i'll stick to castrol.
What i mean is all the oils are roughly the same except for price
and maybe the amount of detergent, so ill stick to what works for
for may vehicles and me.
