overheated at idle

I have a 6.9 liter diesel internationl, pretty much the same as ford f250. Driving down highway for a couple hours, then sat at idle for about 15 minutes, the temp guage shot up to as high as it goes, that has never happened before in 5 years, it has always stayed around 180 when driving. it happened one other time the next day same scenario, couple hours driving 15 minutes idleing. I was thinking fan clutch or thermostat...but since those two times it hasn't happened, even when being at a stand still on the highway for about an hour in stop/go traffic on a 60 degree day. there are no coolant leaks, there is still resistance when you turn the fan when engine is off, so it isn't freewheeling....don't want to replace the clutch if i don't have too, any ideas, i'm about to drive cross country.....

Since it hasn't seemed to happen other than at a stop, I would suspect the fan clutch is not engaging as it should. If the thermostat was sticking, the temperature would theoretically rise regardless of speed. It's also not entirely impossible that the sender for the coolant gauge may be experiencing problems, or the wiring is damaged. When the gauge was indicating an excessively high temperature, was there any coolant spewed out by the radiator cap? If I recall correctly the caps are usually rated around 10 psi, which doesn't take a very high temperature increase from normal to blow them. If no coolant was dumped, I would start checking the wires and coolant sender. Hope you find some of this helpful in some way.
