you may want to go to howstuffworks. I just read the article on steering and i belive your problem may be the rotary valve inside the gearbox. looks as if it does not properly work in one direction you will not have power assist in that same direction. had a friends old mustang go bad, but instead of no power assist in one direction it had uncontroled power assist and kept turning the wheel by it's self. no matter how hard he tried to center the wheel it would crank it's self to the right. It was that little valve inside the gear box. He disconnected the P/S pump belt and was on his way home for repairs.
Go check out this LINK

It's from "howstuffworks.com/steering.htm" just in case the link doesn't work.

Thanks to everyone who replied in an effort to help. I was hoping to hear of a common ball valve or some other happens all the time repair solution, since it is my work truck I didn't want to be down half the day chasing parts and Tearing it apart.I don't get paid to work on my stuff and it was only Monday. This afternoon I pulled the steering box off and rebuilt it.everything is good now.
Thanks,
Tony

P.S. When I was 17 I tought I knew it all.

The gear box is pretty pricey from the dealer if you are leaning towards changing it. 270 dollars at the dealer.

I may not know it all but I'm sure I know more now than you did when you were 17. I'm not your typical teenage punk. I work harder than anyone my age. And no I dont flip burgers. I run a company that builds and wires houses that was in my grandfathers name before he died. It is now in my fathers name since I'm not old enough to "have my own company". When he died, I took full control over his company. I think I'm pretty successful for my age. Not too many kids work 40-50 hours a week AND go to school. Not only do I do construction, I also farm. So you better be thanking me for keeping food on your plate. And whenever I find spare time, I'm on here helping people to the best of my ability and working on old fords. Thats all I have to say and I hope that ends this stupid arguement. Good day everyone
Sincerely,
The non-typical teenager, Chad

There is no argument here, you need to understand that some people do not like BS ( sarcasm, jokes, or stupid remarks) when they ask a simple question, that is perfectly understandable. If you are not sure what happened, I'll fill you all in.... It seems that an experienced mechanic was looking for some advice that would save time and aggravation, received a couple of incomplete answers, and came to the quick conclusion that the problem in question is not a common failure.

I can take it as well as dish it out, there is nothing going on here that requires me or anyone to get upset, or start a flame war. Moderators will kick you off the site if you exhibit "belligerent" behavior. So try to be nice and disregard the BS.

now seriously

Well if you're still interested in the fixing of power steering...
the 1st guy was probably right, you have "blow by" on a teflon ring that is on your valve body's spool in the top section of your steering gear box. The good news is that your local Ford dealer can provide you with the 2 necessary seal kits required to fix this for under $40 for BOTH! the fiirst kit is the sector shaft seal kit ( the shaft that your pitman arm is attached to) the other is the valve body set...GET BOTH they're cheap!!! And while you're there ask for the exploded view drawing they have right on their computer FOR FREE!! If you want a talk through the process I'll be more than happy to provide it. Other wise just stay meticulously clean and don't scratch or ding any internal components. P.S. no sarcasm here.
