My f250 91 pickup truck is having problems turning over. The funny thing is when its cold it starts up fine. once it gets warmed up it has a hard time turning over. i changed the battery, i changed the solenoid and still same problem. its not the alternater i dont believe cause it does hold a charge and it only happens when its warmed up. if i turn truck off i have to wait for eveyhing to cool down. sometimes if i keep trying when engine is hot it will turn over just a lot of cracking. if someone can please help me that would be great. thanks so much
So it's turning over slow when hot? I had this problem and it ended up being the battery. It was at least 5 years old, though, so it was time to be replaced anyway. Other than that I would check all the electrical connections between the engine and the battery, both positive and negative. I would also test the voltage drop from the battery to the starter, if possible when it is hot and you are having this trouble.
Though not in my truck i had the problem that you are having. I would check to see if the battery cables are in good condition. also check the starter solenoid.
It's more than likely the starter itself. When the windings and/or armature start to go bad they draw way too much current after being hot.. This is a common problem.
I wrote that i did change the battery with the top of the line one. so it cant still be battery. any other idea's anyone. its driving me nuts
I listed plenty of other things you could check, and you only read that I said a new battery fixed my truck. Rule that out, go on to what else I had to say.
agreed. the only reason it should be doing that is the electricity between the battery, and the engine. The starter is definately a good thing to look into.
I'm almost positive its the starter. The warmer the engine, the higher the friction, which puts more of a strain on the starter trying to crank it over. If the starter is worn out and weak, it will still start a cold engine due to the lack of resistance from heat, But when the engine is hot, starter just says "no way". Go getcha a new or even a rebuilt starter and I will almost promise that things will work out fine. best of luck to ya.
Could be timing but if the distributor hasn't been touched its probably fine. Get ya a new starter. You also may wanna think of putting in a new wire from the solenoid to the starter. Cheap insurance.I think autozone and advance will check your starter for free. Not sure if this will show up on their 'bench' though.
It'd be nice if those parts stores had a machine that tested starters under certain loads. Maybe I should invent one that does this. Unless someone already has lol.
