Have you tested the wiring between the battery and the starter? What is the difference in voltage between the battery post and the positive post on the starter when hot?
My thoughts are solenoid or grounds. IF you have a stock engine that is. If you've mod'ed your engine then you might need to special order a hi-torque starter and a heat shield. The hi pony engines have always been hard to start hot in my experience esp if headers are anywhere near the starter. (Heh!, hard to avoid not being near the starter...LOL)
I would suggest you clean your grounds first. Its good maintenance anyways.
There are several that are completely overlooked. For instance the fender mounted solenoid. It grounds thru the mounts to the fender. How good a ground might you get thru paint?
Take if off and sand down around the screw holes. Ditto for all the cable ends that attach to it.
Clean the neg batt cable at the batt, block, and frame. Be sure to clean both parts of the connection; cable end and where it mounts too. Theres not going to be a good connection if you mount the cable to rust...
Pull the starter and clean where it mounts to the engine. It's getting ground thru where the housing touches the engine. (Ditto for the alternator btw.)
Now if it still is hard to start hot, then I would try a new solenoid after all, its just a relay with contacts inside it.
Never had good luck with the cheaper auto parts rebuilt starters like autozone. Mine would go after a couple months. Then I bought one from the dealer and no problems.
thats where i bought my starter from autozone. it was a rebuilt. do you think its really that. should i buy a new one? i wonder how long i have to return it. after i put it in, it did the same thing the other starter did so i figured it had nothing to do with the starter. i then changed the solenoid, also change the battery.
My guess would be heat soak. Do you have headers or are you exhaust manifolds close to the starter. This will cause the starter to become very hot after driving it and it won't want to turn over very strong. Header-wrap can do wonders as for keeping the temperature down.
