Does anyone know what causes low oil pressure? I've got a 1984 f150 4x4, 302 cu in. engine. I'm a descent do it yourselfer and may be able to do the repair myself if the engine doesn't need to come out. Thanks.
It could be worn bearings in the bottom end also like the rod and main bearings and or the cam bearings these are all important in maintaining good oil pressure , if the clearances get to great which is caused by wear , then the oil pressure drops . Does it carry good oil pressure when its cold then the pressure goes away as it warms up ? if so then its probably the bearings, more the rods and mains though . also is it a high mileage motor?
It was the oil pressure switch sending unit!!!
Yes baby!! $12.00 and no need for a new engine.
I think the guy I bought it from thought the engine was bad (that's why I got it cheap) but it sounds perfect. Not a single mechanic I called told me it could be the oil pressure switch sending unit. I'm lucky. Thanks for your input. J
Yes that is the first thing to have checked. I did'nt know your symptoms, you would have had low pressure from start-up on to warmed up. this is the way you like things to turn out!
Low oil pressure could be caused by any or all of the following:excessive bearing wear(main/rod),a sticky oil pump pressure relief valve, worn oil pump(gears),contaminated oil(gasoline),extremely
light weight oil(SAE 30 or lower)in a engine that runs at high temperature(oil).Maybe these ideas will help.If your engine has high mileage, bearings and oil pump will probably be the fix.
