I was curious whether a 1989 302 would have a Timing chain or Gears. I am about 90% sure its got a Chain. The truck has 128k on it. If it has a chain then its probably needing replacement. When does the gears need replacement? Can you replace Chains with the gears?
The '89 302 will have a roller chain. If the truck has been serviced regularly the chain may be in decent shape. The roller chains last a lot better than the old plane tooth type chain. At 100K the old chains were history. fwiw, ray

How can you tell if the chain needs replacement? Does a 1993 have the same roller chain?
Always replace timing chains and gears as a set. At over 100k miles I'm sure there is enough chain stretch to effect timing (which will rob HP and MPG). Cost is under a $100.
