I had a 1993 Aerostar and received much assistance from this forum to keep that thing on the road for 236,000 miles. Now, a 2000 Windstar has been given to me (yes) and I wanted to find a forum to plug into in case another problem comes up, or to read up on and have an idea of what to look out for. This van seems really nice, and rides smooth. The steering is loud and creeky and groany. We just replaced the tirrod ends, and put two new tires up front. Any ideas on why it's creeking and groaning? Any ideas on where a decent Windstar forum is?
They need to setup a Windstar forum, because the Aero forum is pretty much for Aerostars, and the Windstar bears more similarities to a Taurus than to an Aero. The Windstars ride smooth, as do all carlike minivans. The groaning is probably from the power steering.
I figured it was the powersteering. I just didn't know if they are all this loud. Is it the same system as the Taurus? I can check they're forum if that's the case.
All power steering from Ford would groan and moan. I just live with that annoying "design feature." As for a Windstar forum, why do you need a forum if you own a Windstar? What you need is a tow truck Just kidding of course.
Power steering issue, the most common thing people do is dump the power steering fluid and replace it with some ATF Mec/Tec III, it does quite them down and make them last longer.
As for having a forum, its up to the site admin, I personally think it is technically a "truck". But sense the drivetrain/undercarrige is from the Taurus, it could be considered a car. You can always go over and talk to Taurus Car Club of America (TCCA) sense it does have the same issues that the Tauri have.
Of coarse sense I own a Taurus, (and others are familiar with it) we can try to help you as best we can here.
Funny you should mention replacing the power steering fluid with ATF!! I happen to glance through the owners manual, and that's what they recommend you use for power steering fluid. I guess it could be a case of the previous owner not knowing that.

There are plenty of people here who can help with the Windstars. They really do need their own forum though, not that they have a loyal following or anything. The only thing the Windstar really excels at is safety. The Windstars do very well in collisions of all types.
I need to have our power steering fixed. The high pressure line to the is leaking badly. I think I'll have a custom one built, as its not that expensive, and much more durable than the original part.
We have discussed having a Windstar forum on here and the "powers that be" have decided that because it is based on a car platform that they really don't want to include them. I'm still trying though
In the meantime it's ok if we get Windstar questions in here sometimes.
Here's a Windstar question for you. I had the tierod ends replaced, and I've got a knock in the front end. You really notice it when stopping on a decline (like leaving my parking garage at work). The power steering is noisy as well, but I don't know if they're related. I'm still looking for a forum also.
khantyranitar, safety is the main reason we went with a Windstar. With two little girls and a wife I dearly love, I wanted to be in a safe vehicle. Also, having done so much work to the Aerostar, I felt comfortable with Ford in the inevitable event I have to fix another product.
A knock is kind of hard to translate via forum without hearing it. You could have a bad motor mount, ball joint, spring, strut, or strut bearing. I doubt the knock is related to the PS unless it happens when you turn the wheel to a certain spot.
I at first thought CV joint, but a guy at work said his made a clicking noise. This is almost a crunch-knock, then when you release the brakes, it does it again sort of reverse. Would brakes make a loud noise like that? Could a caliper be sticking or something? I didn't know if it'd be related to the steering to the degree of causing the tierods to go out.
