I'm looking for a replacement manifold-back system for my 85 F250 6.9NA. Does anyone know of a source for a dual system that runs to a single muffler? While searching the web a couple of months ago, I stumbled across such a system. 2.5" pipes from each manifold that ran back to a dual-inlet muffler, then a 3.5" or 4" outlet that exited behind the right rear wheel in the stock location. All bends were very smooth, and the system looked really sharp. Problem is, I didn't bookmark it, and now I've lost the webpage and haven't been able to find it again. (dang!) If anyone knows about this vendor, please let me know! I've got some time off in a July, and I'd like to make some changes to the intake and exhaust system. Thanks folks!
I would look at Banks. I think they sell something like that, but it's pretty $$$$. I made my own in about 2 days of messing around. I used 2 1/4 bends. I used 3 45 deg bends and cut off the y-pipe right at the junction where the left bank goes into the top of the pipe. I cut a small round plate and welded up the hole. Then I built a smoother Y connector into 3" pipe that I ran to the back of the cab for an old 3" muffler I had laying around. It was a real pain, but considering how much difference it made, I would say that it was worth every cut knuckle and minute laying under that truck getting dirt in my face. If I had to do it all over again and I had a little extra $$ I would buy the stuff, but if you are short on $$$ then it's just a matter of patience and very little welding skill.
Thanks for the idea, Will! What you just described sounds a lot like the Auto-Jet system I've been looking at. 3" mandrel-bent tubing from manifolds to exhaust tip. The setup includes a larger, smoother y-pipe and a low restriction muffler (Much greater flow, yet not much louder.) Beautiful system, just under $300 delivered to my door.
The system I'm trying to locate does not use a y-pipe at all. Individual pipes run from each manifold, under the truck, to just behind the cab. The muffler itself is located on the passenger side of the truck and has two inlets. The driver's side pipe crosses over to join the other pipe as it enters the muffler. There's a single, large exit pipe that leaves the muffler, goes back over the rear axle and exits behind the passenger side rear wheel. I stumbled across this setup (and vendor) when I was doing my original search back in April. Thought I bookmarked it. When I went back later to compare it side-by-side to the Auto-Jet system, I couldn't find it. Web search after web search has been fruitless. Very frustrating.
I put true duals on my truck and the only real problem we had was working the drivers side exhaust around to the passenger side. I also put headers on so that did drop the output of the exhaust fromt he stck manifold position. Flowmaster makes mufflers that are dual in and single out, and vise versa I think. I went with two flowmaster mufflers since I figured if I am spending the $ on making the truck breath easier, I wanted it to flow all the way back. I went 3" all the way and up over the real axle exiting either side. Just thought I would let you know the headaches that I ran into. Good luck. I forgot to mention that I am non-turbo so I could do my exhaust that way. It will help you get better MPG and make the truck sound great
Thanks BC. I'm trying to keep the repairs pretty simple at this point. If I decide to turbo the motor, the down pipe will plumb right into the new, updated 3" system. On the other hand, if I decide to stay NA, then I don't want to have spent a bunch of money I can't recover. The headers and new 'true dual' exhaust system won't be cheap. The turbo/normally aspirated decision is down the road a ways - there's a few other things to deal with first. 8-D
Perry's muffler shop in McMinnville Tn can fix you right up......he makes a muffler looks sorta like a flowmaster......dual inlets and dual outlets....one muffler.....i have 2- 2 1/2" in and 2 3/4" out............i have one....works great on my 6.9.....made out of thicker metal than the usual muffler.............
