My gauge cluster on my 1988 F250 has some issues. The volt meter almost constantly reads low voltage triggering the battery light to come on but when I actually check the battery with a meter during this condition it's fine. Also the temp gauge will go up really high and trigger the engine light to come on and then it goes back to normal. It is also weird that when the blinkers are on all the gauge needles will bounce with the blinker light in the dash. I'm wondering if the circuit board on the back of the cluster is going bad. I have mechanical oil pressure, exhaust temp, and boost gauages so I'm not too concerned about this but I would like to fix this issue. It seems like the more I play around with any controls on the dash, the weirder things get. Any ideas.
Hi, I had a similar problem with a JD tractor. The voltage regulator in the alternator had failed and the dash had received about 25v. I never did get round to fixing it but I figured that the voltage stabilizer had got fried giving the problems you describe.
Ever since I got my truck the gauges acted wierd. My volts were between 8 and 10, my water temp shows that my truck runs hotter on a cold day than a hot day, and my oil pressure is alway dead center of normal, I put in aftermarket gauges because I didn't trust the stocks. as for the flickering it seems like a loose or broken wire is not allowing enough power to the fuse panel, which could also explain your gauge problem. If this is a break in the wire it could cause excessive heat or sparks and start a fire. Also if your batery is getting old be cautious, my last truck went up in flames because of the battery, almost caught my house on fire to.
I'm leaning toward the faulty ground myself. We found some shady looking connections at the voltage regulator and ended up putting in a new regulator and alternator. Also the batteries are only 2 months old. Now the gauges seem more stable but the volt meter jumps with the blinkers still. It's weird but I think I'm getting close.
