F150 Towing

I have a 1985 F150 4wd 351W with a C6 tranny and 3.00:1 axle ratio. Has anyone used this set up to tow 6,000# at highway speeds. If it didn't work out would you change the axle ratio or transmission.

I have not used this exact setup but it sounds to me like the load is a little heavy. If i were doing this i would at the least change the gear ratio to high 3's or 4.11. Depending on how far and how often you are towing and if you live in hilly country then i believe your current setup will be very taxing at best. You will have to wiegh the performance issues if this is your everyday driving truck. Once you change the gearing for towing then your normal driving performance will not be as good as present.
