I've noticed that on the instructions for the preditor it say's not to use the 80 or 100hp setting for any towing. Why is this? I have a 03 ,7.3 ,4x4, crew cab ,sht bed ,F350 ,with guages, 4" exh, quick filter. What is the problem?
I'm guessing that the high EGTs and overboost will be a problem on those settings while towing. I hear that even without towing on the 85 hp and 100 hp settings, the EGTs sure do come up quick and we all know that a high exhaust gas temperature is not good on the engine.
i don't think a stock tranny would last very long towing with the 100hp setting... it's just too much power... i won't even use it just to goof around... tranny's are expensive...! besides... i barely got my foot halfway to the floor from a standing start and my tires were up in smoke... and black smoke is POURING out the exhaust...! like i said in another post... i just wanted to wake my mule up... not jack her up on steriods...!
Running 'round empty certainly won't hrut your truck as long as you've made the proper exhaust and pyro gauge mods, but putting a trailer on would be a very bad idea as it would be just too much of a load for the tranny.
The 100 hp Tune on my Predator only creates about 800F post turbo and that's when you stand on it real hard up hill.
I'm not sure why you would want to use the 100 hp or 85 hp settings while towing; your gas mileage would be TERRIBLE. The towing tune is meant to get more power while getting a better gas mileage.
Actually, I run 100 hp all the time in my '99 PSD including towing a 9000 lb toybox at times. But, I do have a new tranny and torque converter that was custom built to handle a lot more power. On a recent trip into the mountains, I was running 25" boost at 65 mph up the steeper grades (don't know the percentage) and 75 mph on the level parts and tranny temps got no higher than 200 degrees. The exhaust temps topped out at 900 degrees. My mileage was 7.5 mpg up the hill and 12.5 coming back running 75 mph. By reference, a brother of mine took the same trip with a similar load with his new DuraMax and never went over 65 mph on the straights, and a lot less up hill (not that he couldn't) and got only 6 mpg and 9 coming back. But I am sure he will do better when his truck gets more miles on it. I do not know what his tranny temps were, but I will find out.
