The column arm is wobbly in my 78 F-150. It rotates slightly towards the dash, and the driver. It rolled out of the driveway one night, because someone didn't shove it all the way into park. My husband slid a piece of metal in between the column, to keep it from wobbling as much.
Anyone know what would cure this problem? Should I buy another collar, or have someone weld something in there? I took pictures of it, to get a better idea of it.
no its time for a new steering colum you should be able to find a nice tight steering colum in a junkyard for under 60 takes a good few hours to swap it out.
it's a fixed colum. I'm considering going with a floor mount and just bypass it altogether. My husband has been to several JY's and all had worn colums in the exact same area.
I haven't fooled with auto matic collums yet, but do you think replacing the shift tube might help?
Also, Jeff's bronco graveyard sells all sorts of parts for collums as well as complete collums. They have an excellant tech line. You may try giving them a call and see what they say.
Doc
All you have to do it get a shift collar from Ford.
They come primed as I remember, once you get it, paint it with a spray bomb called: Mazda sparkling black .I'll get you the number.
This will make that part look original
Paint the part at least 3 weeks before you install & keep it in the sun to harden faster, early handling of this will deter the finish.
Ok Fellas, got another question for you. I bought a steering column sleeve. I posted this in our state's chapter for help, but got no response. Know where I can get instructions on putting the new sleeve on?
Don't tell my husband this, but.. The fascination of a floor shifter is, I assume easier than figuring out the problem in the column shifter! Haha
Remove the steering wheel
Remove the turn signal switch (DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE CUT ANY WIRES WHATSOEVER. Ask if you need help with the connector).
Remove the upper column bearing, You will need some straight snap ring pliers for this.
There are 2 philips screws under the turn signal switch. They are held in place with blind nuts. Loosen these and the shift collar will come off the column. You can just remove the screws, just be careful the blind nuts don't fall out and get lost.
Drive the roll pin out of the shift collar and transfer the shift arm to the new collar. I would also replace the rubber bushing on the end of the collar as well. 5 bucks from Bronco Graveyard.
Reverse procedure for reassembly.
