4x4 lights flashing

I have read in this forum about the O/D light flashing but.......I have a 99xlt supercab 4x4 offroad with 5 speed tranny and 3.0 engine. Yesterday, I was going down the highway and the check engine light came on and then the 4high and 4low lights on the dash started flashing. Sequence of three slow flashes and then off for about 30 secs and then the sequence repeated.
I disconnected the battery neg terminal when I got home to clear everything out of the computer. I wanted to see if it will occur again. I will have the codes read if it happens after the reset. Any one experience this issue?

I had a similar problem with a `96 Explorer. Found out that if you didn't use the 4 wheel drive very often the electric motor that engages the front wheels would get locked up and not operate. The way I fixed it was to switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel a lot to "exercise" the motor. Hope that helps you.

I'm having the same problem with my 97 ford explorer. The lights have been flashing for some time now with the 3 sequence flashing. Things are getting worse and some times it feels like something in the wheel is grabbing. I also feel like the steering is loose. Any ideas?

i exercise my 4x4 system weekly in the summer, but i have about 12 miles of dirt road before i get to the pavement.
This flashing4x4 light seems to be more of a problem whrn the roads are muddy, i allways wash under my truck
