See you on the boards.

I'm on 'my' 2nd trans in the 05 (including the original) and am having problems with this latest unit/build, and my 03 was a horrible sounding/clunking trans that was traded off.. Even passengers would say...What was that... I know of 4 failures out of about 8 or so 03-05 trucks of freinds/co workers with lower mileages... 'Not' good numbers for the flagship auto trans.. I HATE to talk smack about this/these trucks because I think they are an awesome build.. I do think that the trans needs a re engineering... I wouldn't bat an eye over another 6.0 purchase, but wouldn't concider another 5R untill the build/shift quality comes up.. I know there are those that have had bullet proof units to date, but from the bit of history that I have been whitnessed to, they need help..

Look at the mods ak has. I hate to admit it but if mobey starts popping ak on this one I'd have run with him. Sometimes, trying to be open minded just sucks.

kw: I've been a GM man for 20 years and I have never had a truck like my 01 7.3. My 05 6.0 is starting to get close but with only 12,750 miles I can't quite say it's the best truck I've ever owned. I can about the 01!! These are the only trucks I have ever even thought about prasing at all, putting 200,000 miles on one without spending a penny on except maintenance says it all!! I love them!!
I haven't got a problem with Mods. I have some myself! I do have a problem with someone saying that a mod has done something that it could not have done! Going from 17 to 25 MPG with a programmer is one of them.

I believe comments like that are suspect as well. I can tell you however, that the Pred. did have a positive impact on my MPG. Problem is, to PSD's point, hard to keep my right foot out of the go zone.
Overall MPG is the only negative feelings I have about my truck. But, only because I want it to be better. All the while knowing that if you drive an 8,000 # 4x4 truck aggressively...well...it ain't gonna happen.
Since I have restored the original program it will be interesting to see where the mileage goes under the same driving condtions. Will be fueling up today.
These are my observations and concern..
We all want a reasonably solid/quite trans, with at least a Normal Life expectancy even given the occasional low mileage failure.. Longevity hasn't been proven 'either' way to me at this point, but the 'running' conditions of the two in a row I've gotten has been a little worrysome.. And not to argue, complain, of slame Ford.. OK, maybe a little.. Weather your/my truck has mods (within reason) or you pull extreme but legal/rated loads, which they should handle, or even an empty hauler, the failure rates are somewhat high.. And the 'Normal' clunking and shift bumps doesn't fit Fords build patterns for previuos trannys and driver expectancy for a Ford product.. Even though its a new world of trans technology, this unit build has to be improved to match the quite quality functions of the truck it mounted into.. The failures that I personally know of are from 'stock' trucks.. Not even a lift.. Mine 'never' (03 or 05) had the Predator program on until 'after' the first problems.. My largest concern is.... Our corporate office has been pushing our yard to buy and run GM's over this last year.. They (corporate) have already made the transition
We've been there before.. After much debate and explaination of re tooling/parts/training ect.for the trade off, we were OK'd to buy three more SD's.. One of them lost a 5R trans at around 2K.. Unusual, no not horribly, but the timing couldn't have been worse.. I've been with this company for over 30 years, and 'JUST' the pick ups (PU only/excluding anything larger than an 350) unit numbers are now running PU 2800 and up.. Some Dodge and GM units included and alot of them have been run out/sold/wrecked but has been a substantial investment over this 30+ time period.. And also has been a quality hard working breed I won't hesitate to add.. Our fleet managment has been 'watching' and tracking the overaul record of the new SD's.. And weather they survive as a candidate for future use, depends on the down time, operating costs, trade/resale value ect.. A gamble I'd 'REALLY' hate to see Ford lose given the previous service/life/value record of a Solid Work'n Truck......................HP..................

Our 7.3's have taken a severe beating with little complaint, and come back for more.. Trans life could be a little better, but concidering conditions, a fairly good performer.. We only lost 1 at under 2K..
Other than the minor oil leaks, and of course the turbo drone on my 03, the 6.0's around me and in fleet applications have been good runners.. Not even an injector.. One of our employee's did a DSB for the dying issues that Ford is 'now' addressing.. He's happy with the 05, as with me, but has some complaints about the shift quality/clunks..
