I just bought a 87 f150, and of course they said nothing about the fuel tanks. but before I left the town I thought I would put some fuel in, I put 20$ in the back tank and topped up the front tank, when I left I ran on the back tank which showed 1/2 tank but after a couple of miles I noticed it showed empty, switched back to the front tank and it showed over full and stayed that way for 2hrs of driving on the ride home, still shows over full on the front tank, any ideas what this could be and how I can fix it thanks Randy
is it usually the back tank that drains into the front tank, with a bad solenoid, if so can I just use the front tank till I can fix it. could you give me some idea where the solenoid is located and how to fix it.
thanks for the help
The tank switching valve is found under the body inside the driver's side frame rail. There are a couple relays up front. The system is overly complicated and a good schematic will help.
Sometimes a weak front fuel pump can allow the back tank to pump into the front. I had that problem on a 96 F250 EFI 460 V8. Changed the front fuel pump and problem went away.
The weak pump also caused fuel starvation when pulling heavy loads that acted like transmission slippage. $136 fuel pump...jacked the bed up so I wouldn't have to drop the tank, made the swap... and voila ... two problems solved.
