Engine Swap

I was thinking about doing an engine swap on my 91 Explorer 4x4 4.0. I doubt it, but would a 302 bolt up to the tranny? If so what problems and/or modifications would I run into changing engines?

1. 302 will NOT bolt up to the tranny. At a minimum you will need an adapter plate and special torque converter. If you want to swap, replace both engine and transmission as a complete unit.

Expect lots of problems and expense with the swap. Driveshaft, electronic engine controls, wiring harnesses, AC evap coil will need to be refitted to allow the engine to clear, and so on and so on.

If you put a 302 in front of the A4LD, I can GUARANTEE it will break the transmission the first time you put the gas to it. Guaranteed. They are NOT a suitable transmission for any V8. They're barely adequate for the 4.0L, IMO.

I'd just sell it and get one with a 5.0 like I just did. Only cost me $7995 for a '97.
