2002 Explorer, auto trans shifter problem & cd clicking?
Well this is my Dad's Explorer I'm using while he's got my Ranger. He doesn't take good care of anything else on it but changing the oil. It was about 60,000 miles when he finally got the transmission fluid changed. The coolant hasn't been changed or the fuel filter either. It has 100,000 miles on it and coming up according to the maintenance guide is spark plug replacement and rear axle fluid change. So I'll make him get all that done. But I'm tired of driving it, it's a 4x2 4.0L SOHC and I think it's the 5R55E transmission, it's a 5 speed automatic, the one without a dipstick to check fluid condition. Well there's two problems I've noticed with it when I'm driving it. One is when you are about to put the transmission in PARK it catches before it gets to the PARK position and won't go, you have to let go of the shifter and push it into PARK again. Almost as if you didn't have the brake applied enough to put it into gear, but I made sure that wasn't the problem. Seems like the same thing started happening on my 98 Ranger automatic but it did it much worse, it never would go into PARK all the way and it turned out to be a Shifter cable. Any ideas on this problem with my Explorer's shifter? The other problem is with the CD player, sometimes when you shut the car off it will make this annoying clicking sound from the CD player and eject the CD and say CD ERR on the display. One time it wouldn't accept a CD so I had to take the whole dash apart and the face and get my CD out and had to by a new CD because I scratched it getting out. Seems like Ford always has problems with their Automatic Transmissions and radios. I suspect this transmission has about 30,000-40,000 more miles before it has to be replaced, its a whole different story driving my Cherokee 4dr, 4.0L automatic, I'm surprised at how quick it is accelerating and top speed, we had to be doing at least 130 in our Jeep, the two can't be that much different in weight, and the Explorer has 15 more HP, but I think it lacks a few in torque to the Jeep. Let me know if you'll can think of anything I can check on these two Explorer problems. Thanks.
