No Reverse
Although I still have reverse as well as all my other gears on my 88 F150 300 I6 w/ 5SPOD, I recently experience a problem with my gear shift lever getting "sloppy".
Somebody here posted that there exists a nylon ball on the end of the shift lever that moves the shift-shafts in and out of gear. It has a tendency to "break off" leaving just a stud to move the shift-shafts. It sounds like yours did this and is no longer meshing with the reverse gear shaft.
I purchased a replacement "lower" shift lever for mine which is now all metal. Hopefully, I will be able to replace it this weekend.
I hope this steers you in the right direction.

Dusie, were you able to replace the lower shift lever yourself? I have the same problem.
