Brake issues
Long ago, I've resigned myself to replacing the rotors for every brake job. You have a brake job at 40K miles.... doesn't sound too bad to me.
In my reckoning, 40K is about how long brakes last. Whether it's the pads or rotors, it's time to do them anyway.
In the last 20 years, I haven't heard of Fords being "notorious" for wearing out rotors and not pads. It's usually warped rotors for Fords, and anything reasonable for a replacement rotor (and pads) will outlast the stock stuff 3:1 (note: I'm a DIY guy, not a "pro").

I get between 75,000-100,000 miles per brake job. Annually I inspect and clean them.
My truck is 99 F350 4WD Lariot Super cab. Warped rotors at 75,000 so turned and replaced front pads and calipers.Front pads still had 50% rears 80%. Lasted until 90k warped again. So looking at putting on Power Slots. Was going to get power stops Cross drilled but was told they have stoped making them, cracking problem.
My work truck is 2000 f350 V10 4wd sigle cab Royal Sport work boxes Weighs out around 10500. It went metal to metal at 35000 and at 80000 warped real bad they changed the front rotors out to SP performance drilled and stock rears, so far no problems. The rest of the fleet of F250/F350's are having same problem and are getting changed out.
Order the power slots from 4 Wheel parts Warehouse 4 rotors and pads with 1 year sub to thier club with shipping and tax for $536.81. I was supposed to get Hawk pads but they were out so the sent Spectr Ones, Not sure I want to keep them as don't know too much about these pads, They gave me option to return pads on thier nickle and will send out hawks in 2 weeks when they come in.

I do believe the post 3-15-99's are a touch cheeper.
The early ones use 95MM rotors and post use 110MM and are common through 2005's.
