Well, I'm finally gonna get around to painting my truck. The original paint is in pretty good condition so I am planning on just sanding it to scuff it up good. What grit paper do I need to do this? I have a dual action 6" sander I am going to do all the flat areas with and probably do the seams and ridges by hand. I already have my paint, primer, etc. I just need to know what grit paper to buy and how much will a '67 F100 shortbox take?
Any other advice is always greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!
Not sure what kind of primer it is. I'm assuming its PPG like the rest of my paint. I'm gettin ready to head to town to get my paint re-shook, I'll ask them what paper to use where I bought my paint.
When wet sanding, what grit paper, and how exactly do you wet sand?
It depends on what paint your using. If you can tell that or get a hold of a tech sheet it will tell you. A single stage enamel you can sand with a courser grit then basecoat metallic. Usually around 320 grit for single stage enamel, 400-500 wet for base/clear. If a sealer is sprayed you can usually sand a little bit courser. Find the tech sheet for your paint and it will tell you the final grit to sand with. You want course enough that the paint will adhere well, but fine enough that the paint will fill the sand scratches. 320 dry is equivalent to 400 wet, but if using basecoat over 320 grit on a da, sometimes you can see little swirley so may want to either go over with 400 wet by hand or sand with a finer grit on the da. Single stage enamel will fill more and should be okay with 320 on a da. I personally wetsand before paint even though its a little more work. Also if you don't use a da right and keep it flat, you can make a panel look wavy just sanding for paint. Beginners can do that. If your paint is in good condition, what did you need primer for. Wetsanding is just sandpaper that is kept wet while sanding. Get a sanding block or sanding sponge and keep the surface wet with a hose or sponge while sanding.
