I have a 1995 F-150 reg. cab with a 5.0 liter engine. I am trying to find out if I can pull a 26 ft boat with this truck. The total weight of the boat and trailer is 5100 lbs ( not including the truck and passengers). I think this truck might be too small. Can some one out there please help me. Thanks
depending on gear ratio and transmission a 1987 F-150 with a 5.0 can tow anywhere from 2700-8000 lbs, if we can get some more infromation we might be able to help you.
Im pretty sure you should be fine, my mom's v6 toyota tundra with a stick can tow 5250.
The problem that I am having is that the truck is over heating when I tow the boat. It's fine when I don,t tow. According to the capacity sticker on the door the axle is #17 making it a 3:31 gear. This to me might be too small. The truck seems to struggle when pulling the boat. Any ideas?
If the trucks overheating then that probably means its too small, do you have a tranny cooler, you still havent told us if its even an auto, also you could change your gear ratio, but it would be better just to get a bigger truck.
If you can just get another truck, an old beater, you could tow large loads no problem, my truck only cost 1600 bucks, and it will pull anything you hook it up to.
I pulled a 23 footer last weekend with my 95 351 auto and 3.55 rear end and it did just fine. I have the towing package with stiffer *** end, tranny cooler, oil cooler, and all that good stuff. It actually ran a degree or two cooler than normal. If you have an auto make sure you take it out of overdrive. Torque converters can get pricy.
