Still fighting timing on 90 300 ci 6 (f-250). Located tdc on #1 hole. Timing notch on damper is about 180 away. Talked with mechanic and he said that damper must have slipped. Said to just go ahead and time 10 btdc with bridge removed and engine warm. I did but after a few miles I start getting a funny noise on hard pull between 1500 and 1900 rpm. Advancing spark kills the noise for a while then it is back. My question, if damper has slipped is there a mag trigger or something that would cause timing to creep? I am trying to decide if it is essential to replace the damper before I get a tune up. Thanks in advance for any help on this.
First check the damper and see if it is correct or not, put the number one piston to top dead center (TDC) and then look at the ballancer to see it it is marking TDC. Advise what you find for further
Thanks for the response. Yes I already checked that. The notch is out about 180. I do not have feel for whether it is moving during operation or not. That is the next thing I am going to check. I know it is definately not where it is supposed to be. Parts house wants about $100 for the balancer so I do not want to replace if I do not have to. Also do not want to tune the engine before I replace the balancer if that is critical. I am just not sure how the whole system works so need help.
Ok you do need to replace the balancer, You could look at a wrecking yard to find one. I should be around 65.00 used. You need to replace this asap, if you dont the metal part will separate from the inner part possibly causeing damage to the radiator fan or other components. If I can be of any further help give us a call or email me.
Thanks I appreciate the help. I thought a wrecking yard part might work. Is failure of the damper common? Still wondering how this would affect timing and operation. You describe the potential for physical damage. Thanks again.
It does not affect timing untill you try to set the timing. There are several factors which would make you reset timing. Pingin and/or lien conditions, heating, and just were and tear in the timing chain.
