Good Brakes?

Hey Guys,
Im getting ready to change my pads and turn my rotors. Again!
What are a good set of both?
When i bought the truck the brakes would squeak,(coming to a stop) i replaced pads, rotors, and grease seals. Two weeks later same squeak back again. Ive put up with it for year now. Time to make this right.

Any advise would be great, its for a 97 F-250 h/d OBS
Thanks Guys
Harry

check the caliper slides to be free, make sure the pistons are free and the hoses do not kink or are cracked.
buy ceramics, quieter and no dust on the rims.
buy all the rattle clips and the stailess shims from the dealer. actually napa ceramixs come w/ all of it. but you will spend close to $100 for them. well worth the cash though. 20$ pasd only last like 10-15K in these calipers for some reason!! also put a swirl on the rotrs when the are done being turned. i do it on all the rotors i turn w/ a die grinder and a disc pad while they are still on the lathe.

Are those NAPA ceramics any good for really heavy duty? I've seen them advertised and wondered how good they are.

I have heard that if you do any real towing at all that the ceramics will hold the heat and will warp the rotors up real fast. I have heard that the Bendix titanium pads are the way to go as they dissapate the heat better than any other pad and last longer also. I haven't done it yet but will be soon as my pads are about due for a changing.I also heard that the titanium pads will run me somewhere in the area of $100 a set, but if they last longer and don't squeak they will be worth it.

There is a product called disc brake quiet made by Permatex. The squeal/squeak thats heard most of the time is caused by the pad vibrating against hte caliper. Spray the disc brake quiet on the back side of the pad and wait a few minutes before re-installing and the squeak goes away. Hope this helps. robert

BTW, if you use this product, wear gloves. It doesn't wash off. You will have to wear it off.

I agree with the previous post, coat the backsides, also make sure the pads do not hang up in their mounts (they should slide in and out with no binding spots).

Byrd, I know you can get them for the OBS also as I did have them on my last 95 OBS f-250 , 460 SRW,4x4. I do use the Brake quiet from permatex every time that I change pads or take them down and lube them. It is a great product but doesn't stop the brake dust squeak that you will get with the semi-metalic pads, only washing them when they get dusty will do that.

the only thing that warps the rotors is when the pads are tight in the frame or the calipers bind up, or a bad flex hose.
also if you panic stop alot this will liken the change of warping as well. pads should not have any baring on the rotors. but the better pads are slotted to let the gasses escape.
i even turn brand new rotors as almost every one is warped at a minimum of .012"!! so if you install a slightly warped disc it will likely get worse very fast!!

are you sure that the slides and the pads were free in the caliper frame??? this is a huge issue and most often over looked. you must make sure the pads slides easily inside the frame. do not tap them in,they will stick and warp the rotors maybe even melt the centercaps!!! if you need to grind the pad to fit easily...i do it all the time.

they also make 3 different price ranges. make sure to get the ones w/ shims on the pads and also all the rattle clips and stailess hardware.
the shims and hardware is all of the noises, the pad is just a speaker to amplify them!!! all the napa pads are made by rabestos i am told.
alot of the time i will use the wagner quiet pads, they have a pattened shim that is sealed into the pad plate and cannot fall of like the stick on type.

Sorry 18vx but heat is the main killer of a lot of things and anything that radiats heat will start causing problems. I have used many different pads throughout the years but have found the titanium to work the best so far. There are also new clips, springs etc. on my brakes now and after a few days they start to squeak, washing them out stops it for a few days. I use my super duty as a super duty and expect it to be a super duty and haven't had any real problems yet with anything just using common sense and doing what would normally be normal maintenance. I have upgraded a lot and feel confident with everything I have done including the brake pads and rotors.

noone said heat was good. so i am not sure of you opinion.

if the rotors are slightly warped even .005 the pads will slide side to side and cause the noise to resonate.
