I had a tranmission temperature guage put on my V-10, but I'm not getting a reading. The mechanic placed the sending unit in the line running to the cooler.
When you turn ont he ignition, the needle moves up to just below 100 degress and it remains there no matter how much you drive.
Any ideas on what is going on.? I can take it back to him, but I'm sure he'll charge me more labor to fix it.
If I had to guess, I'd say the sender isn't grounded properly, or the wrong sender. It should start to creep up after 3-5 miles depending on the weather. I'm pretty sure the thermostat in the cooler somewhere opens around 150 degrees, mine hangs out there unless towing.
You will find a 1/8 npt pipe plug just above the shifting linkage on the tranny, Remove it and install the sender unit there. It will give you pan temp from that location.
Moved the sensor to the plug in the transmission and the guage kicked in. I guess the fitting on the in=line application wasn't letting the fluid get to the sensor.
Another quick question. It's going about 160 solo driving down the highway, what can I expect when towing and not get excited?

Reason: new question
When I'm pulling my 5ver it will run 180 to 195 on a 90' day, it will go up to 200 on hills put then fall back off after the climb. Now if you want to race up and down hills it will probably be a little higher. I tend to take a little easy on my tow vehicle there to dam expensive to fix and replace.
there is a spot on the trans the 6.0 area guys have been using . in the cooler line will not work.
Actually, I'm running two sensors in my cooler lines just outside of the tranny housing. I have one in the send line and one in the return line. Get very accurate fluid temp reading this way.
Kennicol,
I got a phantom. The guys at the racing shop had it and thought it would do the job. With the brake controller under the dash I cut a hole in the dash just under the guage panel and to the right of the steering wheel. It looks fine and works good.
Some of these other guys may know of some more exotic guages.
I run the SPA Design gauges. I really like the fact that they read ANY temp (no worries in the winter that the gauge isn't working because the tranny doesn't warm up to 100), and they are recording gauges. They also read two sensors (split readout) on one gauge head. Available in black or white face and the backlight is adjustable between green or red. On the downside, they are more expensive.
