Starter Selinoid

Ford Guys,
I have 3000mi. on my 300/6 to 302HO crate swap and last month the new sel. switch went south. Replaced it with a used one off a 83 lincoln out back, and it lasted about 3weeks.
Any ideas as to what can cause these things to go bad? I think it's a bad starter, maybe because this is the 4th. AC Delco starter that would work.
Other than that everything works great now that I put on an A/C idle stop selinoid.

See Ya'll,
Moe

Moe,

Sorry to hear you got some problems with your setup. Did you change out your voltage regulator? Also, check to see what your drawing during cranking and don't forget to check that circuit that you have running from your solenoid to your MSD. I'm not sure what the starter should be drawing, but I can find out if you need the numbers.

Yup, put in a new one when I installed the motor.

Put in a "new" selinoid last night and I have the same problem.......clickedyclickedy..you know the sound....anyway this A.M. I took the jumper cables and bypassed the selinoid, still can't get the starter to turn, lots a sparks, so I'm gonna check the "new" cable, which I'm sure is OK, and take that "$100 lifetime warranty" starter back for a refund then bite the bullet and get a NEW FORD starter. Well at least I got 3000 trouble free miles out of it without opening the hood.

How's it goin with you? I've been off the computer for a while.

See Ya,
Moe

Say, that happened to me and it turned out to be a bad cell on my new battery. Man, it sure gets to ya when you put in all new stuff and still can't get it to work.

I'm STILL working on the front end. I've got all new ZOOPs brackets and have everything lined up, but I still need to get custom hoses for the A/C and PS pump. The A/C hoses look like they will cost about $110 each to get make up so I've slid that to a lower priority. I talked to Baker Automotive out of CA and the sent me a hose kit for the power steering pump ($64). I've gotta get some time to put it on yet. Slapped a MSD adjustable timing module in. Didn't set it right away and noticed a lack of power. Checked the timing and found that I was running at TDC. Set the timing to run at 12 in the middle of the dial and checked the end points; I can now dial in my timing from 4 to 24 while driving down the road. Pretty neat!

Good luck,

Slik

Yea, I've spit more times this morming than the entire Red Sox team, anyway, just got back from Lone Star Ford and they don't sell the same starter anymore, it's a new style with the starter selinoid relay mounted on the starter and with this I'll need a $90 wiring harness to hook up the $200 starter. The style I have is not sold anymore. The guy at the counter said that if I had "headers" I'll continue to burn up starters! "Just great!" I said "I bought the Y pipe and headers from you guys!" I go back to get another ACDelco and they don't have any! I guess I shouda stayed in bed. You have headers and haven't heard a word about multiple starters....

That sounds like a neat idea alright, don't even have to turn a wrench or open the hood!

Gotta go see what kind of heat shield I can find to mount on the starter.......when I GET one that is.....what a bunch of BS......Boy, that 65 Impala SS down the street is starting to look very nice.....Wonder if he needs a truck to work on......I might do something stupid.

See Ya,
Moe

Yeah, I did end up replacing the starter from my original I6. Just got an Advanced Auto rebuilt, then wrapped it in a thermal blanket. Haven't had any problems with that yet.

That SS sounds nice and Chevies are "easier" to work on, but I'd sure hate to see you dump your Ford. It looks great and I have not seen more than a few people that have done the I6 to V-8 swap. Hang in there!!! It's got to be something small that's eating your starter system.

Just a thought; my mechanic told me they did not have any faith in the Advanced starter rebuilds. They get all of their starters rebuilt by what they feel is a quality rebuilder, but it would cost about $80-90 for the starter. If you want, I can get one and send it your way. My mechanic says they are the best that he has used.

Like I said, it's just a thought!!

Hey Moe,you can still get the "older" versions{4" or 4.5"}starters new, but, only at a parts house that handles MOTORCRAFT products! You see,for some reason,FORD genuine parts are MOTORCRAFT,but FORD doesn't carry the complete line, only aftermarket parts houses. Now,if your dealer really wanted to help, yes he could obtain the starter through his channels,he just has to want to!Try to find a parts store or a website like carparts.com or wrenchhead.com that handles MOTORCRAFT.And by the way,the "new" style starter will work, and you don't need the harness! Just make a jumper from the "s" on the "new" solenoid to the cable post of the "new" starter. You still retain the original solenoid because you have now "hotwired" the new one! Do you remember the "HD" starter for the 460 Lincolns w/ starter mounted solenoid? It was set up just like that! There is also another way to "wire" up the "new" starter by extending the battery cable all the way to the starter as well as the "s" wire present now, bypassing the original solenoid all together.I guess your guy at FORD just hasn't grasped the concept of "retrofit" yet!

Make sure you get a blanket for your new starter to keep it cool!
