Hmmm, how about some piece of metal wedged against the VSS?
It could be in the speed sensor. I'd check their first. My dads 97 did the same thing. After alot of searching we found a short in the dome light in the rear driver side door. I think the dome lights, power mirrors, ect... are on the circut also so good luck and let us know what ya find. We finally noticed that opening and closeing that door effected when it blew.
VSS may have metal on it from the diff, get a new one very common and only like 30-40$$$ oem only!! good luck or if you have a scanner check the VSS datastream as you drive and make sure it is accurate and not hunting!!
