Max tranny temp loaded? Empty?

What is the max tranny temp you guys have seen unloaded? Mine was up near 190 yesterday on the freeway but the AZ heat was high too. I haven't driven this truck during summer yet but my typical operating temp has been around 165.

What is you normal operating temp?
What does it reach when towing?

I've heard that most transmission damage happens above 200 deg F. Any opinions?

I recently installed ISSPRO guages in my 04 PSD Excursion 4x4 and at first was alarmed by the 190 temp during rush hour the next day in Atlanta. Has been very hot here. I also pull a heavy travel trailer but my temp does not ever get above this even towing. I have had many people put my mind at ease regarding the temps. Some will tell you that it is on the warm side though. I just make a regular habit of checking my fluid and color.

Thats exactly my question.... Whats the heeeeck is up with the stock gauge, how does the tranny come up to operating temp (according to the gauge) in a few minutes (cold start) ??? The engine temp hasn't moved ..., its sitting at idle and somehow the tranny is up to operating temp? Smells like a loose CAC hose to me (skunk)...

I put a big LPD cooler on my '97, I've heard that the cooler on the new trucks works fine... Do you all have the same opinion?

Bricot From what I have read the stock gauge is just a dummy light that"s made to look like a gauge. As long as it is below the preset tempature it will show normal but once it is to hot than it will show hot. It should always give the same reading when normal. You will need a aftermarket gauge to get the real temp.

If the stock cooler is as good as people say and the idiot guage will actually move it starts getting too hot, I'm ok with it.

I didn't bother putting a guage on my '97 after putting the big Tru-cool LPD cooler on it. Knew enough people with guages and that cooler towing extreme loads through the desert with no rise in temp, so why worry.

Guess I should actually take a peek at the cooler on the new truck see how big it is. The upgrade on my old truck was 4 times the size of stock.

Well I just topped my previous high. I hit 200-205 degrees on the I-10 yesterday w/ an ambient temp of 105. The lie-o-meter read 110-111 all weekend. I pulled off the freeway and let it idle for 10 minutes and got back on the road. It eventually cooled to 165.

Jump on the SCMT and it seems to go right back up and the temp doesn't drop.

Should I be worried or is it just the temps we are experiencing in AZ right now?
