One or two catalytic converters?

1989 F150 Lariat, Auto C6 -anybody know if my model has one or two catalytic converters? Haynes manual says some models have a "light off catalyst type mounted just past the exhaust manifold pipe" and also a "conventional oxidation catalyst mounted further downstream".

Under the truck I can see the conventional type - not sure if there should be another one.

I think the 87-96 trucks had two of them. I'm pretty sure that 92-96 did. Every 92-96 that I have seen is set up that way. The front one acts as a Y-pipe, and the second one is about the size of a glass pack. There are some aftermarket replacement systems that only have one. I have been told that there are different stages of cats. If you have a 3 stage then you only need one. Otherwise there is a 1 stage and a 2 stage. My terminology may not be correct, but its something like that. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I was thinking about cutting off the second one. Here in Missouri, they're not too worried about emissions. Anyway, my muffler shop owner buddy said it would be quite a bit louder if I cut one off.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION (and ignore my stupid talk), yes, there should be a 2 cat setup in the 87-96 trucks. someone else correct me if this is not what they've seen.

I dont know about the 460's, but the 300, 302, and 351 had the 2-cat setup.

Mine is down to zero cats, lol.

I wiped out the muffler and drove a pipe through the back cat. It has a nice purr but not loud enough for me. As soon as I find somethin to get through that bend in the pipe between the cats, I'm knockin the 1st one out. Hey Memorex what kind of exhaust you got? I've got a 351 with the single tail cause some idiot before me decided not to put the twin pipes back on. My exhaust goes through the first cat and thats it. What do you have?

No cats to a deltaforce flowmaster.

There are some pics in my gallery of how I did a 'homemade' exhaust.

All of the F150's of this year range were supposed to have two cats.

The F250's may have one or two, and the F350's generally (not always) had one massive cat.

Anything with a 300 (F150 thru F350) had two cats.

How's that for confusing?

And to make it worse, if you're not the original owner of the truck, the number of cats might have been changed before you got it. Why? Because modern day cats are much more effiecient than they used to be in the late 80's, early 90's, so having a pre-fire cat and a regular cat is just extra welding to do when replacing the exhaust system.

And to those without cats... I have a cat shaped resonator ;-)

My 94 Lightning came with 2 cats and 2 pre-cats from the factory.
I've since removed it and replaced it with an market system, longtube headers with aftermarket cats. One thing I can say is that the stock mid pipe section alone, with the cats, weighed almost as much as my entire aftermarket system....yuk!

C'mon! This is FREEDERIC we're talking about...LOL

He bought a whole truck from the local yard, took it all apart and sold all but an almost new cat on ebay. Cut a hole in the top of the cat, gutted, sealed it all up better than new, custom bent a peice of exhaust he had laying around, and reinstalled it. All in few hours work and made 2k off the parts he sold on ebay...
