I have a 4.9L with a temp gauge that don't work. if i understand this right, it's on the left side of the motor as you look at it with the hood open. It should be under the exaust manifold by number 6. IF the problem is in the wiring, how hard is it to put a aftermarket temp gauge in. It shouldn't be to hard i don't think.
Why not just replace the wire if thats the problem esp since you'll have to route new wiring for a new guage anyways.
To test the gauge, disconnect the wire at the sensor and ground it. The gauge should peg. If it doesn't then its likely a bad gauge or ribbon wire needs to be reseated.
The gauge can be replaced. Look in 'articles/instrument cluster and dash controls/installing an oem tach' for info on how to disassemble the cluster and gauges.
Popa is right quicklook, the tstat sender feeds the eec for fuel mixing/engine control purposes, the other sender (under #6) simply feeds the gauge. In essence, Ford wasted money on two temp sensors. Why? I don't know.
Yea... Fords great engineering. My 95 351 has three. One by the thermostat housing, another somewhere else (cant remember), and then the gauge sending unit which I just yanked out and put a sunpro mechanical gauge in.
