Carb Spacer

I have a 83 F-100 with a 302 two barrel Autolite carb that came out of a 74 van. It has a carb spacer about one inch thick that has a pipe about 3/4" wide coming out of the back of it presumably for some kind of pollution control device etc. It has been plugged off since I bought the van a long time ago. My questions are

What is this supposed to go to?
Can I replace the spacer with a solid one?
Can I just eliminate the spacer and bolt the carb directly to the manifold?

Carb Spacer

I'm not sure about the 302, but the 351M & 400M had a spacer plate like this and it was for the EGR valve. The valve mounted on the rear of the plate.

Carb Spacer

The tube on the spacer plate served as the vacuum source for the PCV system on the older Fords. If your PCV is open or sourced at the carb, just keep the plate source blocked and continue to use the spacer. Do not operate without the spacer. In especially hot climates fuel in the carb will percolate from the heat of the manifold resulting in a lean mixture and "vapor-lock" like pedrformance. The best spacers in hot climates are the phenolic non-metal type. HTH
