Guys
I have a 92 ford explorer that looks like it had a R134 conversion kit installed. My problem is that the air is NOT cool. I brought it to a mechanic and he put guages on it and he told me that the low side was 120? lbs? He said that the pressure should drop while the compressor runs; his diagnosis (and $40 bucks later for 10 mins worth of work) is that the compressor is bad and that it needs to be replaced. Should I just buy a cheapie 134 wal-mart recharge kit and see what I get? He scared me by telling me that the low side (with the compressor running) was waay too high. HELP
That sounds a little fishy, but if the pressure was that high it could definately hurt the compressor. Id suggest getting a gauge at a auto parts store (made for A/C fittings) and test it yourself. Youd have to majorly overfill the system to get it to that pressure. (Thats the normalish pressure for the high side). If its too low just get one of those refill bottles, you probably wont need a whole kit. I like either the ones with the push button, or a can with a valve attached, that way you wont need to worry about overfilling the system.
It may not be high. It would depend on what the high side is showing. If the compressor is not working, or working well, the low side pressure could read that high.
if the low side is 120# with the compressor running, it is not pumping you need a new compressor. something in the line of valves, or pistons not moving. unless the metering device is stuck wide open(it's a long shot(really long)) but the suction piping would heat up.
