I first thought i had a prob with my ac, bc it was blowing warm at idle i just bought a digital temp and at idle the ac blows at about 60 degrees and varies with the temp being 85 outside anyways when i drive it will go down to 48-47 with the ac on high and max. The explorer will also begin to run a little past half way on warm days after running for a while in trafic, so what i figured the problem is the fan clutch, my question is how do i replace it and is it ez to do if someone can give me some sort of info or lead me into the right direction thanks, oh yea its a 92 explorer. 4x4
I have a 91 Explorer 4x4, and had to replace the water pump a few weeks ago. It shouldnt be that difficult. You will need a large (1 1/2in i think) wrench or a large ajustable wrench. The fan shroud should have the rotation written on it at the top. That is important! At the front of the water pump, between it and the clutch, you will see what looks like a large nut. You might be able to just use the wrench and take it off or you might need a cheater bar( pipe big enough to fit over the end of the wrench.) Some of them were put on with a chisel and hammer so it might be kinda difficult to take it off. After you take it off all you have to do is take the four bolts that hold the fan on the clutch out, install the fan on the new clutch and put it back together. Make sure you tighten the clutch back to the water pump very well. Good Luck.
thanks trucountry i just read in the hynes manual that you need a special tool to hold what i think is the water pump pully from spinning while removing the clutch, would that tool be needed or can i just loosen the nut with out the tool or use something differant to hold the nut from spinning
Both tools come in a kit Autozone will loan (deposit required) Both are 1/4 inch thick metal open end wrenches. The larger fits over the square opening of the bolts that hold the water pump pulley to the pump. The smaller fits the fan nut. On my 91, this nut has LEFT HAND threads so be advised.
edit: P.S. You may want to check into getting a new fan from Ford, especially if yours is cracked. My replacement had more blades than the original, so I got a 2 for 1 when I replaced my clutch. Cost from Ford was very reasonable, around $20 I think. Thing cools like a champ.

The fan on mine is cracked pretty bad but I havent had the money to replace it yet. How many blades did your new one have? The one on mine has 10 so maybe its been replaced B4. Oh yeah, mine has right hand threads, and it took me awhile to figure that out...lol.
