Thumbs up rusted manafold bolts

i just removed my manafolds ... heck of a time .. what im wondering is ... to not have to go through this again would i be better off using stainless or maybe hardned bolts .. ive taped out the holes already .. im planing on doing a rebuild in 2 years (hopfully not before ) and really dont want to go through the stress of wondering if im going to break this one or the next stud ... thanks for a great site ..

i think where i lucked out is i have the motor out of the truck ... i put my impact on low and let the hammer do the work .. but still stress full ... the exhust pipe bolts were a different story.. smoke wrench .. nuts welded to the studs and impact on low .... im going with headders but keeping the manafolds should i want to go back to stock ... ive taped up the holes to hopefully keep the cridders and the rust out

I did exhaust manifold work on my 1973 ( lots of rust ) and days before starting removal i hit every bolt and nut with p b blaster. Used a good fitting socket/wrench and every bolt came out in one peice. I know I got lucky but the p b blaster had to have been part of the reason.

Hopefully i get headers soon. All these horror stories of breaking bolts and drillin them out is scaring me! lol . Here's my plan:
-Soak them with PB blaster every day for a couple of days before putting headers in.
-When its time to take them out, use a torch to heat them up.
-Wishfully, they will come out!

I just hope I remember to let that pb blaster dry befoer going at them with the torch! lol

Where's the fun in that

It took me 3 days in the middle of January to get my headers on (I should have waited to put them on in may when i had the motor torn apart)

pb blaster is great stuff, especially when you wait to let it work. I may soon be doing a maniford job on a '95 5.0 and hoping for good luck.

Hey MemOrex, you might want to check around about using a torch on heads. The heat could create a warping problem... then you will have a real headache.

Manifold bolts can be fairly forgiving, I just pulled the manifolds off a high milage W and none broke. The ones for the pipe though... 2 studs came out, the other 2 were just the nuts and the only threads were what was inside the nuts. I wish I know why some or all come out easy on one engine yet the next one they break.

Rusted Nuts

I can testify about the PB Blaster treatment. I just pulled all the bolts-studs etc off the manifold. All of them came out as if they were only in there for a couple months, instead of 10 years.
I soaked mine a week because I had the use of another car. I've heard it should soak a couple of days minimum. I like it best of all the rust busters.

To answer CT.Russ' original question, I replaced the original manifolds on my 89' bronco 302, and used stainless bolts with a good antisieze and never tightened them again. No leaks, no problems. Using good gaskets didn't hurt either I suppose.
