Well my transmission totally quite on the weekend. Its in the tranny shop and they say its running but they dont want to drive it around the block. Anyway there asking $400 for removal, inspection, installation. If it requires, or i want a rebuild they are quoting $2500-$3000 (minus the $400 installation). They pulled the pan and said theres a lot of metal in the bottom.
The truck has about 160,000 miles and i the tranny has been rebuilt. Ive had the truck for 4 years and it had a single owner who im sure never rebuilt it. I had a flush /change 2 years ago I know absolutely nothing about trannys, though i am leanring.
The price sounds like a lot but then i know its expensive too.
Is the price excessive for a rebuild? . Ill find out tomorow from the shop what they see.
that tranny is the most expensive to rebuild for sure. figure 1800+ easy. now you could have saved yourself some cash by doing the removal and reinstall yourself. if there is metal in the pan best guess is its shot and needing rebuilt. that tranny was especially prone to failure prior to 93 when it recieved a whole mess of upgrades to strengthen it.
I've heard anywhere from $1500 to $2500 for HD rebuilds ? You can purchase rebuilt ones on fleabay for around $1600 24mo warrenty and $500 core deposit. Theres a high performance stage III rebuilt for $1900 as well.
there is a web site that has ford trannies. They had an e40d, completly rebuilt with a reworked valvebody, and a brand new torque convertor for $3500. But I can't remember what it was, i will do some research and get back.

The trans shop we use (a trans only joint) is run by a guy who is into Ford trucks and Broncos.......like that. He knows E4OD's like the back of his hand, and said that it is one of the better AT's Ford has made. It is his AT of choice for his F150.
He also said that with the right upgrades, and beefing up of the critical components that he can make my E4OD just about bullet proof for $2700. Granted I know this guy very well and bring him a lot of work.......so I have no idea what the regular price would be......OH and that price is with me removing and replacing the tranny myself.
Had mine rebuilt HD for 1200.00 BUT about 2 months after the 6 month warranty ran out I had to get it re-sealed for 600.00 (it had about enough of open desert driving in sand towing a small trailer... good thing there was an ATV on the trailer cause I probably would still be walking!)
Just got my truck after a complete tranny rebuild. Also had the transfer case completely rebuilt the fork in it had a broken arm. New (rebuilt) from manufacturer torque convertor and also a new front ujoint. 1 year parts and labour warranty. Price $2800. Now i have to figure out how to pay for it.
Check with your favorite Ford dealership. My bit the dust @ 156k. They replaced it with a Ford remanufactured unit installed for about $3000. Came with a 3yr/36k warranty. Got about 50k on it and it shifts/runs perfect.
I had mine rebuilt in April and it cost me $2500 out the door. I also had a new radiator put in because the old one had the cooler lines blocked which is why the trany fried.
Just picked my 94 bronco up 2 days ago. My E40D just got rebuilt after 163,000 miles. I also "knew a guy" and paid $1700 for install, rebuild and new torque converter. $1808 with tax. It shifts so smooth now I have to watch the tach to tell when it has shifted. Next stop, engine rebuild, paint, interior, on & on & on.
