the ony problem i had was that the factory oil filter was a b%t$h to get off!!!!
planned on using a oil filter cap wrench but this didn't cut it... had to borrow the neighbors oil filter wrench and access it through the top of the engine to get the correct angle and leverage......
This is done on purpose so you will bring it to the dealer for the 1st change.
Really, it's done because they ship the motor with that filter on it, and then put them in the rig. A few years back some filters came loose on another brands cars after they had been 'limp wristed' on at the factory. It has more to do with the newer way of building than anything else. Notice it is not just these trucks with this problem.
And I agree, it's a bugger to remove.

that thought crossed my mind "making it tight so i'd take it to a dealer for the first oil change"... so i am not sure what to think now....
everyone tells you to hand tighten the oil filter and then turn it 1/4 ways with a wrench.... and they warn you not to overtighen..... well, i guess over tighening doesn't really hurt anything as the factory oil filter had a death grip on the truck......
another think i noticed... the factory oil filter doesn't look like the retail motorcraft oil filter... same size roughly but the factory one has a different wrench pattern on it's end than the retail one... the markings are different also....i know this because i had to buy 2 different oil filter wrench caps... one that fits the stock factory oil filter and another that fits the retail motorcraft oil filter.....
mericanwit,
i wouldn't think the oil drain plug i installed will void the warranty... it's just a pan plug (plugs a hole).... as long as it holds oil in the pan (so far it does) i can't see how it would do any harm......
Per the dealer the color is white or grey (from the factory). They do this to make sure you are changing the filter, in the event you bring it in for a warranty issue that is related to the oil filter. They need a way to make sure you have changed the filter. If you bring it in for service at 12k + and the grey\white facotry oil filter is still on, that's a problem.
but that's only true for the 1st oil change... how will they ever know you haven't changed it since after the 1st oil change?... say something happens 20,000 miles down the road.. and you've only changed the oil filter once and you take it in for engine related warranty work?

Several things here. The factory has always used different filters in new cars. Part of it is design team stuff, the other is that the filters are ordered and line itemed differently.
The engine assembly plant has zero to do with a retail outlet.
At one time the filters from the factory in GM were cheaper and shoddier than the ones A/C sold to the consumer.
Now I think it leans the other way.
The factory filter costs less than the retail one, even if it is better, as there are no name brand costs concerned.
Remember, Ford doesn't make oil, filters, etc. they contract for them.
Also, a motor might sit on the factory floor for a year or two before being installed. The retail filter might change colors, brand, markings three times in that period. No sense giving the customer another reason to grouse.
Weird thing about changing oil filters. The guys that don't change them at all, usually never change them. So even though I am sure that is not the reason, it is still valid.
