Better Mileage

Hi, I have a 2001 Ranger with a 3.0L V6, I am trying to do any thing I can to get better gas mileage out of it. I have already put a K&N air intake on it and it works great. What else can I do to help out the mileage?

When I saw your post and pointing the mouse over the header link said "Ranger" in it, I instantly thought "Damn, he's got the 3.slow engine!"

You really can't do anything to that engine. It's a car engine in a truck. Period. Not a well tuned from the factory example of that, etiher.

Buy a 4 cylinder model or live with what you've got. As you may have gotten piled onto by other Ranger owners in the past--maybe not--the 3.slow is 4 banger power (Out of a v6....forget it!) with v8 mileage. The 4.0 gets equal mileage with better power.

they just get bad mileage

From Egor
There is nothing you can do, this is an old pushrod engine. The only good thing about this engine is it will last forever. I have an 04 five speed Edge, I hate this thing, I was told by Torrance Ca Ford ( the power Ford group) I was getting the big engine, I ended up with this junk. Ford was going to dump this engine but the UAW forced them to keep production, they don't care what the mileage is. I suspect this engine is smoged to death, it has three cats to clean it up. There are a lot of posts about PING I suspect a bad combustion chamber shape, and this flex fuel is a joke, the power goes down and the cost goes up. It was an EPA please. If you like the truck the way it is keep it. Or get the Dodge, I am stuck with mine, I also have a Dakota I love it, twice the room 4.3 old engine but has power and same mileage. Have you noticed when you look in the engine bay how narrow this engine is, it was made for small cars and the narrow V will not let the engine balance it has three harmonics and will fly apart if you try and spin it up. The new 4 cylinder engine has 6 HP less and gets good mileage, go figure, Thanks Ford.
