Close! The 351W uses a different balance than the 302 which means you need to get the correct harmonic balancer on the front of the crank and the right flex plate (if automatic) on the back of the crank. Also, you will need to purchase an adapter from Ford to allow you to transfer the front mounted accessories from your 302 to the 351W. The 351W has about a 1 1/2" higher deck than the 302 which also makes it just a touch wider. But the motor mounts and tranny and everything else should mount okay. Oh, and the 351W ends up being about 40 pounds heavier than the 302 (shouldn't be a problem).
It looks very simplw, yet the exaust system, intake, etc are a little different...
I thought this was to be a bolt in, however the oil pans, are different, try and get a whole parts truck, because the swap will nickel and dime you to death...
I swapped a 351 into a 302/f-150, runs like a champ but wow, the nightmares I had scrounging up the little small parts!!!
Buy a good parts TRUCK!!!!
I also depends on how much of an engine you get for the swap. If you get a complete engine from the boneyard or a crate motor, the swap will be pretty easy. If you buy a long block expecting to use 302 parts on the 351W then your in for a surprise. There aren't many parts that will swap between the two engines.
>I have a '93 F150 4X4 extended
>cab with a 302. Can
>I just take out the 302
>and drop in a 351, Is
>it that easy?
Basically... yes & no! The blocks are almost the same (351 is a little taller) but not much else. My question is why? Is the 302 in such bad shape? Ever thought about just putting the $$ into reworking the 302? I think that it is a better all around engine. The 351 can be a gas hog with not much increase in HP. I have a 94 like yours (std cab though), I put shorty headers, Fireball ignition & changed to synthetic fluids and bumped the timing to 13, now it is running much better. But I think the O2 sensor is bad... I'm getting 12mpg.
The 302 is one of the best engines out there. But, there is certainly nothing wrong with the 351W. Remember, there is no replacement for displacement. I disagree that the 302 is any better than the 351W and I get 10-12 MPG with mostly city driving in mine. You can get more horses out of the 351W and it will rap as tight as the 302 (it's a beefier block so maybe it would rap even higher than the 302) and it is a total of 40 lbs. heavier than the 302.
I have a 93 F-150 Reg cab-longbed and am getting exactly 19.56mpg. The best I got was 22.1mpg, during the summer. I have headers, mufflerless exhuast, hypertech powermodule, and K&N filter, and a few other add-ons, like Accel plugs, and wires, and my timing is set at 12 BTDC, which the comp pushes to about 17, and am happy with it. If I was you, I would add some after market products to your 93 and save a little cash, and get decent mileage at the same time!
