I need to check the fuel pressure on my 98 XLT 4.0. I was hoping to rent one, but no luck. While checking online to find a source to purchase one, I came across a page that described making one. That seemed like a inexpensive solution as I don't see this as something I would use all that often. Then I got to wondering if I could convert my compression tester to test fuel pressure. Or would that ruin it? Of course it may cost more to buy fittings than what fuel pressure gauge would cost.
I've heard of people making their own FP testers, and I know some of the gauges that were used were once found on compression testers. So it'll probably work if you do it right.
Keep in mind that the fuel pressure specs for the '98 are 64 (+/-8) psi for both KOEO and KOER.
Most compression testers are designed with dry type guages, not intended to be used wet. That said a compression tester should work, but may cause premature failure of the tester in the long run.
I would think you would be able to find a fp tester fairly cheaply($30) maybe even cheaper at a Wal-mart if they carry them. You also need to be able to bleed off fuel at a certain rate and be able to test pressure at a rate of like 1/4 or 1 gallon per minute rate, With all the time, hoses, fittings, valves involved in making one, I'd say your better off just buying one.
just go to a small repair garage. They would probably test if for $20 or so. I got my tester at NAPA, I think.
