Hello Folks,
New user, have a 79 f100 2wd, just completed major overhaul, ready for paint.
I rebuilt entire front end and suspension, replaced pwr steering pump twice(1st leaked), replaced steering box twice on recommendation from other mechanic.
The truck drives fine in a straight line but does not return to center. Very spooky. Have had front end aligned,it is good, disconnected box and front end moves freely, have adjusted 2nd steering box still no better. Boxes very obtained from advanced auto, reman., bad boxes or should I be looking for something else?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
CONFUSED.
i did the balljoint only in my broncoII and had the same problem. my "mecanic" friend did not tourqe them right. were way to tight. took them out and tourqed to specs and fixed problem. was sure scary with no center return. hope this helps.
Hey Fellows, thanks for your responses, Square wheels, the box was adjusted by mechanic, by the screw and nut on top of unit and he had another mechanic try also, neither was successful, they both feel that the box is bad, reman? as the rest of the suspension moves nicely when disconnected from the box. I have not considered that the column is binding me up. I thought I would bounce this off you fellows first before I go searching for a new and better reman steering box.
Reman box likely problem. Isolate the box from the column & the linkage. Verify the box as bad. Return to sender. Check reman anything before installing. Always suspect you got the one rebuilt by the new guy!
Thanks for the help guys, I think that is the best way to go, any thoughts on who may a better supplier in the event I do need to replace strg box again?
I did exactly what you have done with my front end. I suspected the box that I replaced only to find that it's replacement was the same. About a year ago I finally had the I-beam bent into the correct alignment, yes - bent the old school way. The old timer that worked on my truck informed me that I had the box adjusted way too tight (even though I followed the Ford shop manual to a T regarding the mesh adjustment), but the damage had been done and only time would help "loosen" it up to the point that it would return on its own. I've given up and pretty much figured it's not worth the hassle to chase a minor point around for the effort. Those boxes are heavy and are a challenging one man job to replace anyway.
I agree with tetraruby300, the box is adjusted too tight, this will destroy the box if run too long being setup too tight.
Loosen the lock nut and backout the screw about a quarter turn and tighten the lock nut. If things improve, try another quarter turn until things do. If things do not improve, the box is probably aready hosed.

I agree, the box might be too tight (had the same problem on a '67 Bronco once) but you might also check your caster setting. If you're running too upright your steering won't return to center.
