tranny troubles

My automatic tranny has been acting up for awhile now. When I am sitting at a stop light and the light turns green I release my foot off the brake and you can feel the engage hard before I give it any fuel. It does this just about everytime I am stopped at a light. I've checked the fluid level and it is fine. With what little knowledge I have, probably more dangerous than good, it feels like the TC is slipping and when I release the brake as the truck starts to roll forward the TC engages HARD.

Has anyone experienced this before and if so what is the outcome?

Most automatic transmissions will engage very hard when there is a problem with the pressure sensor. It's the transmission's way of actually protecting itself. When it engages softly, there is more slippage of the clutch packs internally, which causes more heat and wear. It sounds like the pressure sensor may be bad, and by default is allowing full pressure to go to the torque converter, so that's why it engages with so much force.

where would the pressure sensor be located and how could I go about checking it to make sure it is bad?

The pressure sensor is located inside the transmission, so the pan would have to be dropped and the fluid drained. Usually an interface with the computer using a scan tool can tell if the pressure is correct or not internally, or if there is another condition which is causing the transmission to not operate correctly.

There is no pressure sensor in the transmission. The IS an electronic pressure control solenoid which is called an EPC Solenoid. That could be the problem.

Job Well Done!

An update to my original post......as I was browsing this board I came upon a post that talked about greasing the drive shaft where they join together right behind the carrier bearing. I greased the splines tonight and it took care of my "clunking" problem. And all this time I've been thinking my tranny or TC was going out when it was something as simple as this.

Once again thanks FTE for keeping mine and all others PSD's running strong!
